Prepare Your Home for Cold Weather

Freezing temps are in the forecast for southcentral PA, and before you know it winter will be here! If you’re a homeowner, now is the time to prepare your home for cold weather and prevent the challenges that chilly temps can cause.

Below are some simple and effective tasks you can do to help winterize your home and keep it cozy and trouble-free in the coming months!

Furnace

Before the cold hits, schedule service for your furnace to ensure it’s in optimal condition. Turn it on and test it well in advance to avoid any last-minute surprises when temperatures drop.

Rain Gutters

Clean out your rain gutters by removing leaves and debris. This will prevent unwelcome clogs that can freeze and damage your gutter, downspouts, and roof.

Hoses and Outdoor Faucets

Remove all your hoses from any outdoor faucets and check for leaks which can lead to basement flooding.

Sinks

Have a sink in your garage or in another unheated space in your home? Make sure the water supply is shut off before temps drop.

Garage Doors

Close your garage door to keep out the cold. This helps maintain a more comfortable temperature and prevents any plumbing in the garage ceiling from freezing.

Windows

During the winter, you can expect some moisture on windows. Turn your HVAC fan to ‘on’ instead of ‘auto’ to improve airflow. You can also use a dehumidifier to keep the moisture level in your home at a moderate level.

Condensation

Some condensation may appear on the caulked corners of your walls and bolts. This is normal and should resolve once the weather warms up. Wipe down any damp areas and monitor them to avoid mold growth.
